Remembering Metroland: A Blast from the Past at Metrocentre
For many, the mention of Metroland will evoke fond memories of carefree days spent riding roller coasters, dodgems, and other attractions at the Metro Centre in Gateshead. Opened in 1988, Metroland was a popular indoor amusement park spanning over 200,000 square feet, attracting families from across the North East and beyond.
Metroland was a unique destination, featuring rides and attractions themed around the railways and the industrial heritage of the region. Visitors could enjoy a simulated ride on a train, drive miniature locomotives, or even take on the ‘Runaway Train’ roller coaster. It was a place of fun, thrills, and laughter for people of all ages.
The park’s popularity saw it expand to have many different attractions, including dodgems, a rollercoaster, and a selection of classic fairground rides. As well as the rides, Metroland also had a selection of eateries for visitors to enjoy.
However, after nearly two decades of operation, Metroland was forced to close its doors in 2008 due to declining visitor numbers and increased competition from other attractions. While the site has since been transformed into a food court and cinema, the memories of Metroland still linger on for many.
Fortunately, there are still ways to relive those memories and get a glimpse of the excitement that Metroland brought to the Metro Centre. A video filmed at the park has surfaced online, offering a window into a bygone era of indoor amusement parks. The video shows the park in all its glory, including the roller coaster, the ferris wheel, and the pirate ship, as well as many other rides and attractions.
Watching the video will take you back in time to a place where the sun always shone, and the laughter never stopped. It’s a nostalgic trip down memory lane that is sure to bring back happy memories for those who remember the park fondly, as well as offer a glimpse of what Metroland was like for those who never had the chance to visit.
