Gateshead’s Grade II-listed Old Town Hall is set for a new lease of life, with developers revealing ambitious plans to turn the historic landmark into a new neighbourhood hub.

Social impact developers Capital&Centric have stepped in to restore the Victorian building and transform its surrounding car parks. The goal is to better connect Newcastle and Gateshead by creating a brand-new town centre community, complete with homes and green spaces.

The project is being backed by a £3.4 million funding boost from the North East Mayoral Combined Authority (NECA), working alongside Gateshead Council.

What is being proposed?

The vision for the site goes beyond just restoring the building itself. The initial plans include:

  • Around 250 new homes: A mix of design-led housing right in the heart of the town.
  • Space for indie businesses: Dedicated areas for local cafés, bars, and restaurants to open up.
  • New green links: A pocket public park and tree-lined walkways connecting the town centre down toward the River Tyne.

The purpose built Victorian town hall is a huge piece of local heritage, and the plans aim to protect its character while bringing it back into daily use.
