Eurovision Celebration Hits Times Square in Newcastle
Newcastle is gearing up for a dazzling Eurovision celebration, complete with an abundance of sequins and vibrant outfits.
The Eurovision Song Contest party is set to take over the city on Saturday, May 13, with festivities kicking off at 4 pm in Times Square. Attendees can look forward to over three hours of impressive entertainment, featuring live music, DJs, and special guest appearances.
Following the festivities, the Eurovision final, which attracts millions of viewers worldwide, will be aired on a massive screen at 8 pm. The broadcast will come after a Eurovision-themed episode of BBC One’s The One Show.
Newcastle was a contender to host the international event on behalf of the 2022 winners, Ukraine, but ultimately lost to Liverpool. Nevertheless, Newcastle has been selected as one of the few cities across the nation to hold an official Eurovision party. The event is a collaboration between Newcastle City Council, the BBC, and the European Broadcasting Union.
Michelle Percy, Director for Place at Newcastle City Council, expressed excitement about the upcoming event, stating, “Eurovision is one of the biggest television events of the year, and there is a real buzz with the contest being held in the UK this year.”
Percy went on to acknowledge the strong support from residents, businesses, and communities during the bidding process, as well as the connections made with the Ukrainian community. She emphasized the warm Geordie welcome extended to Ukrainians seeking a fresh start in Newcastle.
The Eurovision Song Contest party promises to be an unforgettable event for both residents and Ukrainians living in the city. Tickets are priced at £5, with a portion of complimentary tickets allocated for Ukrainian residents. Tickets are available for purchase at www.fatsoma.com/newcastle-eurovision-2023.
Additionally, residents can enjoy free screenings of the Eurovision semi-finals at Times Square on Tuesday, May 9, and Thursday, May 11, starting at 8 pm.
